TOP TIER GASOLINE STANDARDS

Audi is part of a group of leading automakers calling for higher gasoline standards. Audi, along with other top auto manufacturers, recognizes that the current Federal mandates for minimum detergent requirements for gasoline do not go far enough to ensure optimal engine performance.

This group of automakers is raising the bar, calling for a premier standard of gasoline performance, with TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standards. These standards create a winning situation for gasoline retailers, auto manufacturers and drivers.

The Issue

Currently, many gasoline retailers provide fuels with lower-quality additive packages that can build up deposits in combustion chambers and may lead to intake valve sticking. These lower levels of additives can have a negative impact on engine performance and vehicle responsiveness.

Since the minimum additive performance standards were first established by EPA in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the concentration level of detergent additive in their gasoline by up to 50%. As a result, the ability of a vehicle to maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards has been hampered, leading to engine deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions and driver satisfaction.

The Solution

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standards help drivers avoid lower quality gasoline which can leave deposits on critical engine parts, which reduces engine performance. That something both drivers and automakers want to avoid.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT OIL MATTERS A LOT MORE TODAY THAN IT USED TO

The power plant in your Audi is one of the most advanced and sophisticated engines available today. Built to precise specifications, it requires an exact grade, viscosity and quality of engine lubrication.

Many synthetic oils available today provide better engine lubrication that can outlast traditional petroleum-based oils, making them a smart choice for use throughout the life of your Audi. Because of this fact, Audi strongly recommends that you use synthetic-based oil that complies with Audi oil quality stand VW 50200 as a replacement lubricant for your engine.

Whether you use synthetic or petroleum-based engine oil, the oil that you use must conform to Audi’s oil quality standard VW502 00 in order to help keep your vehicle’s engine running smoothly and help prevent the formation of harmful sludge and deposits that can lead to expensive repairs. At the time of printing, all of the engine oils Audi is aware of that meet the exacting Audi oil quality standard are synthetic-based.

Engine oil for the engine in 2005 and newer model Audi vehicles

Specification and viscosity

Your engine was factory filled with all-season, high-quality engine oil that conforms to Audi oil quality standard VW 50200.

If you need to add oil between changes, or perform an oil change, use only an engine oil with the correct specifications that compiles with Audi oil quality standard VW 50200.

To help prevent the formation of harmful sludge and deposits, use only oil with the Audi oil quality standard VW 50200 specification printed on the oil containers.

Engine oils are graded according to their viscosity

The proper viscosity grade oil for your engine depends on climatic or seasonal conditions where you drive. You can use oil with a viscosity grade of SAE 50W40 across all temperature ranges for normal driving conditions. However, if engine oil viscosity grade SAE 5W40 is not available, you can also use viscosity grade SAE 5W-30 or SAR 0W-40 as long as it meets Audi oil quality standard VW 50200 specifications.

FACTS ABOUT BRAKE WEAR AND SOUND

The braking system is the single most important safety system on your automobile. It is capable of converting large amounts of kinetic energy into heat energy with a matter of seconds, under every imaginable traffic condition. All of this is accomplished in a total braking friction area that may be less than 48 square inches.

Brake wear is subject to many variables. Normal loading or use of the car, the type of driving (city or highway), or even different driving styles can make a difference in brake wear. There are no “normal” brake wear standards. Check your braking system on a regular basis to assure that it is in proper operating condition (refer to your owners scheduled maintenance).

Brake sound or squeal is frequently believed to be a symptom of defective or worn brake pads. Actually, this type of brake sound can be heard in perfectly good and relatively new brakes. Most brake sounds are unavoidable and require no action. Unusual sounds should be investigated and repaired, if needed.

Brake Materials Used in Audi Vehicles

The majority of today’s vehicles use semi-metallic brake pads, which offer excellent performance. Because of the metal-to-metal contact involving semi-metallic pads, the sounds generated by the brake system under normal operation can be greater than vehicles equipped with the previous asbestos linings.

All sound is caused by vibration. The squealing sound you may hear when you apply your brakes is usually caused by the brake pads vibrating in their mounts-which is a perfectly normal condition. This phenomenon is most prevalent in vehicles with front disc brakes. Front brakes are responsible for a high percentage of stopping action for front wheel vehicles. Disc brakes, by their very design are most likely to have the pads vibrate.

Depending upon the local environment, weather conditions and individual driving patterns, sounds from the braking system may be more or less apparent. The following sounds are characteristic of all braking systems (including other vehicle manufacturers) and are therefore unavoidable. These sounds do not indicate any improper operation or malfunction of the brake system.

Trace Squeak/Squeal Sound
  • Occurs with front semi-metallic brake pads at medium speeds when light to medium pressure is applied to the brake pedal.
  • Occasionally may occur on rear brakes during the first few stops and/or with cold brakes (especially morning) and/or high humidity.
Grinding Sound
  • Common to rear brake assemblies and some front disc brakes during the first few stops (such as after the vehicle has been parked overnight).
  • Caused by trace corrosion (light rust) on the metal surfaces during vehicle non-use or storage. This light corrosion is typically cleared from the metal surfaces after a few stops causing the sound to disappear.
